Why Choose ClearFuel™ Fuel Polishing Systems for Your Fuel Operations?

ClearFuel™ fuel polishing systems are designed to maintain stored diesel and hydrocarbon fuel within ISO 4406 cleanliness specification, preventing contamination spread and protecting downstream equipment.

With proven performance across industrial, forecourt and marine applications, ClearFuel™ supports operational readiness where continuous fuel quality is essential.

Improved Fuel Cleanliness

ClearFuel™ continuously removes water, particulates and sludge from stored fuel, helping maintain fuel in a cleaner, more stable condition and reducing the impact of contamination over time.

Reduced Equipment Downtime

By addressing contamination before it affects engines, burners and fuel transfer systems, ClearFuel™ helps lower the risk of blocked filters, poor combustion and unplanned maintenance interruptions.

Extended Fuel Storage Life

Routine fuel polishing supports longer-term fuel storage by managing degradation factors within the tank, helping preserve fuel condition and making stored reserves more dependable when needed.

Enhanced Operational Assurance

ClearFuel™ provides a practical, preventative approach to fuel maintenance, supporting compliance, site resilience and greater confidence in fuel quality across standby and operational systems.

Fuelcare ClearFuel™ Polishing Systems FAQs

Find answers to frequently asked questions about Fuelcare's ClearFuel™ Polishing System and its applications.

What is fuel polishing and when is it needed?

Fuel polishing is a multi-stage filtration and conditioning process that removes solid particulates, free water and microbial contamination from stored fuel - returning it to a clean condition suitable for engines and generators. It is required when stored fuel has degraded, contains visible contamination, is causing filter blockages, or has failed a quality test. It is also recommended as part of a regular preventative maintenance programme for any standby or long-term storage fuel system.

What contaminants does the ClearFuel™ system remove?

ClearFuel™ removes three categories of contamination: (1) solid particulates - rust particles, soot, colloid carbon and sediment - using 5μm filtration (B5=100); (2) free water - to below 200 ppm (EN590 compliant) with 99% water removal efficiency (SAE J1488); and (3) microbial contamination — including diesel bug (Hormoconis resinae), biofilm, bacteria, fungi and yeast. It also removes biofilm from tank surfaces, which standard filtration alone cannot address.

What cleanliness standard does ClearFuel™ achieve?

ClearFuel™ systems deliver fuel cleanliness at ISO 4406 18/16/13 - the international standard for particle count in hydraulic and fuel systems, also required under EN590 (the European automotive diesel standard). This is the cleanliness level required for reliable performance in high-pressure common rail injection systems and sensitive engine fuel systems.

What is the difference between a fixed/skid-mounted and a mobile unit?

Fixed and skid-mounted units are installed permanently at a storage location and are recommended for tanks over 20,000 litres or where ongoing polishing is part of a continuous fuel management programme. Mobile units can be rapidly deployed across UK sites for emergency treatment or scheduled polishing visits. Contact Fuelcare to determine the most appropriate configuration for your operation.

How often should stored fuel be polished?

Frequency depends on contamination risk, fuel turnover rate and application criticality. For standby power systems (generators, emergency diesel), annual polishing combined with regular biocide treatment is a typical minimum. For higher-risk environments - data centres, hospitals, marine vessels, offshore platforms - more frequent treatment may be required. Fuelcare can recommend a polishing and treatment schedule based on your specific operation.

Is ClearFuel™ suitable for data centre and standby generator fuel?

Yes. ClearFuel™ is particularly well-suited to standby and backup power applications where fuel may sit in storage for extended periods, increasing degradation, water ingress and microbial growth risk. Clean fuel is critical for standby generators - contamination is a leading cause of generator start failures during power outages. Fuelcare recommends a combined programme of ClearFuel™ polishing, FuelClear™ M15 biocide treatment and OptiClear™ stability improvement for all standby fuel systems.
