EU Biocidal Products Regulation - Kathon™ FP 1.5 Fuel Biocide

All biocidal products sold within the European Union now require an authorisation before they can be placed on the market. The active substances contained within the biocidal product must be approved by the European Chemicals & Health Agency as well as the products' trade name. Those products without approval will be removed from the marketplace (see https://www.hse.gov.uk/biocides/eu-bpr/product-authorisation-overview.htm). Fuel Biocides (and any chemical that claims any sort of microbicidal activity) are included within the scope of the E.U. Biocides Products Regulations under 'PT 6' (Product Type 6 - 'In Can Preservatives').

Kathon™ FP 1.5 (as the trade name) and ‘CMIT/MIT’ (active ingredient) have been approved with a 'Union Authorisation' i.e. the ability sell anywhere within the E.U. The supply & sale of Kathon™ FP 1.5 Fuel Biocide is therefore currently (Feb, 2020) in a transition period with pricing, availability and distribution arrangements in flux.

DuPont (Kathon™ FP 1.5 manufacturers) have granted Fuelcare a similar biocide (‘FuelClear MB15’) under the Biocidal Product Family of Kathon™ FP 1.5. Kathon™ FP 1.5 & FuelClear MB15 will therefore be some of the only fuel biocides with approval across the U.K. & the EU. When FuelClear MB15 is available, it will have identical characteristics as Kathon™ FP 1.5 but a different trade name. Approvals may be moved from Kathon™ FP 1.5 to FuelClear MB15 in the coming months.
